2015 Congressional Art Competition

Posted by WVIA Admin on

Initiated by members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide annual art competition that allows high school students from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and territories to showcase their artistic ability. WVIA is proud to host the qualification for Congressmen Lou Barletta, Tom Marino and Matt Cartwright for the 10th, 11th and 17th Congressional Districts.

The first place student from each district and his/her immediate family will travel to Washington, DC for the Artistic Discovery Exhibition Opening where they will have their artwork displayed for one year in our nation’s Capitol building. Travel accommodations are supplied by WVIA Public Media.

Submitted works will be displayed at Mainstreet Galleries in Kingston from April 3 through April 25.  An opening reception will be held at the gallery on April 10 from 6-8pm when the winners will be announced.  Artwork will be accepted at the WVIA Studios in Pittston, PA during normal business hours (Weekdays 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) up until Wednesday, March 25, 2015 or at Mainstreet Galleries in Kingston during gallery hours (Weekdays 10a.m. to 6 p.m.) or via appointment.  Art does not have to be framed, but must have a sturdy back and be suitable for hanging.  All entries that are not suitable to be hung immediately may be disqualified.  Students must affix a copy of the entry form to the back of their piece and include a second copy loose with their work. To be eligible for the Congressional Arts Competition, the high school student must reside in the district represented by Congressmen Lou Barletta, Tom Marino or Matt Cartwright (PA 10th, 11th or 17th).

Winning artwork will be displayed at the United States Capitol for the entire year, and cannot be returned to students earlier. Students, therefore, should submit artwork they will not need for other purposes. For more guidelines, including: size limits and to download rules and entry forms, go to http://www.wvia.org/education/congressional-arts-competition/.
