PITTSTON, Pa. – The WVIA special “This is My Song – 500 Years of the Reformation,” which premiered on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, has received a 2018 Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Judges Merit Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.

The program, produced in partnership with Susquehanna University, features the musical ensembles of Susquehanna University marking the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation.

Five hundred years ago Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, igniting one of the greatest religious and cultural upheavals in human history. One of Luther's reforms was the renewed emphasis on congregational singing. Luther himself wrote about three-dozen hymns and sought to position music at the forefront of the religious service. Susquehanna marked this anniversary with a concert of music based on, or inspired by, hymn tunes, including a brand-new setting of three hymns for choir and orchestra written especially for Susquehanna.

The program featured the Susquehanna University Choir, Chamber Singers, Chorale, Orchestra, Wind and Brass Ensembles. Filmed on location at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and in St. Anne's Church in Augsburg, Germany.

"We are proud to have been a part of this award-winning event that presented music that is not only beautiful but also historically significant," said David Steinau, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music at Susquehanna.

“We are honored to have won this award with Susquehanna University and appreciate the recognition of our staff’s excellent work.” said Tom Curra, WVIA President / CEO and Executive Producer.
