Sgt. Pepper's Musical Revolution

Saturday, June 3rd, 8pm

This program offers a look back at the creation, and ongoing influence, of the revolutionary 1967 Beatles album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." When The Beatles stopped playing live in 1966, they suddenly had the time to pour all of their energy into writing and recording, creating an album that was a performance unto itself. Released in 1967, after what had been essentially a media blackout on what the band had been up to, the album was immediately a sensation and was recognized as a new chapter, not just in rock music, but in the history of all music.

Hosted by British television presenter Howard Goodall, this film uses visually striking elements to conjure up the psychedelic world of Sgt. Pepper, provide context for the culture of the day, and show how the album was driving force within that culture. It also highlights how contemporary projects, like Beyonce's "Lemonade", would be unthinkable today had The Beatles not completely upended the whole concept of what an album should be. And for the Beatles fan in all of us, the show offers up material that has been squirreled away for decades, known only to a handful of people at Abbey Road Studios, including recordings of studio chat, and isolated instrument tracks and vocals.

Joe Bonamassa: Live at Carnegie Hall - An Acoustic Evening

Saturday, June 3rd, 9:30pm

On this very special all-acoustic concert, world-renowned platinum-selling Blues-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Joe Bonamassa is joined by an all-star ensemble of world-class musicians, including the acclaimed Chinese cellist and erhuist Tina Guo, whose repertoire stretches from classical to heavy metal; and Hossam Ramzy, the Egyptian percussionist and composer, who has performed on dozens of film soundtracks and records, and was the percussionist on Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's No Quarter: Unledded Tour. Reese Wynans (piano), Anton Fig (drums) Eric Bazilian (mandolin, hurdy-gurdy, saxophone, acoustic guitar, vocals), and three backing vocalists, Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins, and Gary Pinto. Everyone knows the old saying about how to get to Carnegie Hall, but Bonamassa has truly lived that advice. His entire life and musical career has been practice for this moment, and a young blues-boy is finally making good on his childhood dream of playing one of the most hallowed stages in the world. This stripped down, all-acoustic show will truly allow his fans a glimpse into his soul and presents a thrilling and musically dangerous spectacle akin to walking a tightrope without a net. JFK: The Lost Inaugral Gala

Thursday, June 8th, 8pm

In celebration of John F. Kennedy's 100th birthday on May 29th, this program opens a window to the glamour and excitement that descended on the nation's capital for his 1961 inauguration, with a never before seen musical event - the Pre-Inaugural Gala, produced by and starring Frank Sinatra. It was a star-studded musical celebration, scheduled to be broadcast on television the following week.

But on the day of the gala, January 19, 1961, Washington DC was hit with a colossal blizzard, and most of the performers were stuck in the Armory, rehearsing all day, unable to rest or change clothes for the evening. The storm took out most of the power in Washington but a few generators powered the minimal lights and cameras. In the end, it was decided not to broadcast the program.

The black-and-white gala performances will be enhanced and interconnected by brilliant color and black-and-white footage from the Kennedy years, with insightful commentary from a distinguished host and interviewees. The artful mix of Kennedy home movies and photos, television news coverage, White House archives and footage from this previously unseen gala helps define the fabled Kennedy years and their legacy in the arts.

The program includes performances by Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman, Harry Belafonte, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Gene Kelly, Helen Traubel and Jimmy Durante. A specially written political parody of Kennedy's campaign features these luminaries as well as others, including Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Milton Berle, Alan King, and more.
