11:15am ,  Music of the Baroque Christmas Special.

The WFMT Radio Network and Music of the Baroque wish you and yours A Joyous Holiday Season, as we offer our annual presentation of their Brass and Choral Holiday Concert for your listening pleasure.  Please join our host, Peter Van De Graaff as he guides you through music of the 16  and 17th centuries by composers such as Michael Praetorius, Giovanni Gabrieli, Richard Pygou, Vasily Titov, Dietrich Buxtehude and Mikolaj Zielenski, among others. Brass instruments have long been associated with ceremony and celebration. Ubiquitous in Renaissance court pageantry, their connection to royalty and wealth lent an air of respectability to any occasion. Courts and churches capitalized upon the exalted status of brass instruments, flaunting their virtuoso players and composers in order to enhance their reputations. Diverse in nationality, temporality and musical style, the stories the pieces in this program tell are nonetheless similar in their message. Many are related to the Christmas narrative, shedding light on different facets of the tale, while others offer a timely reminder that the wonder and awe the season inspires can last the entire year. Although the Christian celebration of the birth of

Christ is the dominant theme, it isn’t the only one at work in this program. Different

nationalities, perspectives and styles are reconciled through the power of music, and glorious harmony is clearly the result. What better way to celebrate the holiday season?

From its earliest years, Music of the Baroque has drawn audiences from across the Chicago metropolitan area, performing in the intimate settings of neighborhood churches chosen for architectural interest and acoustic excellence and, since 2004, at the Harris Theater in downtown Chicago . Listeners across the country have enjoyed the work of Music of the Baroque, which was the first professional chorus in America to have its own regularly scheduled nationwide broadcast series. The chorus and orchestra of Music of the Baroque are comprised of approximately 60 professional musicians. Chorus members have active operatic and recital careers and many perform regularly both in the United States and abroad. Many members are also members of other leading ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera orchestras. Chorus Director since 2001, Edward Zelnis has performed with Music of the Baroque for more than 20 years. In addition to preparing the chorus this season, Mr. Zelnis is also principal conductor of Light Opera Works, music director of the Park Ridge Chorale, organist and choirmaster at Christ The King Roman Catholic Church, and organist and choirmaster at Congregation Kol Ami, all in Chicago.

Thompson's expansive jazz vocabulary soars in "Joy to the World 2007" as he adds fresh perspectives to songs of the season. 9:00pm Jazz Standards

Although Christmas Eve may seem like an unlikely time to gather jazz musicians, a number of outstanding performances took place on that date, from Fats Waller’s innovative band in 1936 to more contemporary pianists such as Kirk Lightsey. Duke Ellington recorded his “Liberian Suite” in 1947, and Helen Merrill waxed her famous session with trumpet genius Clifford Brown in 1954. Christmas Eve also marked the day for two unqualified masterpieces in modern jazz: Miles Davis’s Bags’ Groove from 1954 and Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil from 1964. These musicians ushered in the Christmas celebration with their brilliant artistry.

Noon ,  Carols for Dancing

People today usually think of carols as songs performed by choirs or celebrity vocalists during the Christmas season. But originally, carols sprang up as festive dance songs for a variety of holidays and seasons. Lauda, villancicos, noels and carols, all medieval dance song forms, became linked with innovative celebrations of Christmas and then flowered during the Renaissance. So at Christmas, these cheerful songs accompanied joyful dancing at home and in the streets, in churches and cathedrals.

"Carols for Dancing" explores the intimate connection between song and dance in this rich heritage of holiday music. Built around vigorous performances by Renaissonics — an award-winning improvisatory Renaissance dance band that produced new arrangements for this special — the program tells the story of the mid-winter holiday dance tradition with brief, intriguing narratives by host Ellen Kushner, creator and host of PRI's "Sound & Spirit."

"Carols for Dancing" showcases instrumental music, revealing the fascinating and often unexpected stories behind familiar carols and offering listeners the chance to learn while enjoying an upbeat music presentation.
