Apr. 23 (note: special day) EJ Oulette and Crazy Maggy. Violinist and singer-songwriter EJ Oulette and his band Crazy Maggy perform energetic, mostly electric music, ranging from original rock tunes to traditional fiddle tunes. Their recent CD Rock the Bow 5.0 has been getting national recognition. They make their Homegrown Music debut with some brand new music, not yet released on CD.

Apr. 29   A special guest appearance by Marcus Eaton. Idaho-based guitarist, composer and vocalist last year released The Story of Now, which won the Graham Award for best CD of 2006 on Mixed Bag. Recently, Eaton has been performing extensively in the Northeast, so he stopped by to pay a visit to the series. It's not exactly Homegrown this time, but the music is quite remarkable. He performs a set of brand new pieces marked by his fascinating. rhythmically intricate style and his impressive acoustic guitar technique. With a little help from technology he performs rich arrangements of his music by himself in real time.

Apr. 30   A Homegrown Jazz Special with HOTTER THAN THAT. This is a great quartet of young musicians -- two still in high school -- who perform spirited versions of traditional jazz in the style of Jellyroll Morton, Fats Waller or Bix Beiderbecke. Featured on piano and vocals is Drew Nugent, a Bloomsburg University student, who a couple of years ago was a national winner on the Prairie Home Companion teenage talent contest. They make their memorable debut on the program with a set of venerable jazz standards and novelty songs. (Note: Start time 7:00 PM, during WVIA's All That Jazz.)

May 6  Ross Dacko. A talented singer-songwriter makes his debut appearance on Homegrown Music. His CD Master and the Monkey has been featured on Mixed Bag. When he's not per forming as a folk artist, Dacko works behind the scenes as a recording engineer, producer and composer. He performs a nice collection of new songs, many not yet released on CD.

May 13            The Unteachable Men. This core of this group from straddling the border PA/NY region around Binghamton, NY goes back to the 1980s on Homegrown Music. They return to the series with a new collection of their distinctive and often whimsical music. This incarnation of the Unteachable Men goes co-ed.

A Homegrown Music Concert with SMASH PALACE. WVIA's unique monthly series of two-hour live concert-broadcasts continues with a performance by a long-running rock band from the Philadelphia area. Smash Palace goes back to the mid-1980s when brothers Stephen and Brian Butler formed a band called Quincy, which released an album on Columbia Records in 1985. After an extended hiatus, they reformed the group in 1999 as Smash Palace and one day in 2005, they played a show in the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, where the Beatles were discovered. Smash Palace also found themselves "discovered" at the Cavern Club, and were signed to an American record label. Their CD from 2007, Everybody Comes and Goes was featured on the Mixed Bag weekly album review series, and was also widely praised for their intelligent 21st Century update of the "British Invasion" sound. After a studio session appearance on Homegrown Music in 2006, the band makes their first appearance on the Homegrown Music live concert series.
The concert will also feature additional performers. See http://homegrownmusic.info for updated information.

May 20            The Bleeding Hearts. Another Homegrown Archive segment from 10 years ago features a first-rate roots rock band that includes guitarist Neal Casal (now with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals) and keyboard man John Ginty (Robert Randolph Band).

May 27            Walter Prezelski. Distinctive and eclectic singer-songwriter Walter Prezelski from Uniondale, PA, has released four CDs of music that defies ready categorization. He returns to Homegrown Music with a new collection of his songs, joined by guitarist Kelly Birtch.
