We begin a new year of the "What Are You Listening To?" series on All Things Considered with a visit from three friends from past editions: Gita Jackson, David DelValle and Chris Harbaugh. NPR's Steve Inskeep listens along to their current musical interests.
Boston's DelValle provided summer music picks the first time Inskeep spoke with him. This time he chooses "I'll Be Around" by legendary blues performer Howlin' Wolf. This song is notable for being darn LOUD, often to the point of distortion.
Connecticut's Jackson, a middle-school student, impressed NPR's Jacki Lyden earlier this year with a firm "No Britney" pledge -- as in, no Britney Spears. Jackson offers another tune that won't be labeled bubble-gum music: "Gentleman Caller" by Cursive. It tells the story of a couple cheating on each other. Cursive is on the Saddle Creek record label out of Nebraska, home to many of Jackson's favorite bands.
Virginia's Harbaugh picked out a little bit of Dylan and a little bit of The Clash the last time he was on the program. This time he turns to the storytelling in a song from Patty Griffin called "Sweet Lorraine." The stripped-down quality of the tune is no surprise once you learn that it started life as a demo tape.
