A Carbon County man was arrested by the FBI Monday for checking a bag at the Lehigh Valley International Airport with hidden explosives inside.
Mark Muffley, 40, of Lansford, is in police custody.
Muffley was attempting to fly to the Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida. Inside his checked baggage, TSA agents found a circular compound containing a granular type of powder consistent with a commercial grade firework. Wrapped in wax-like paper and clear plastic wrap, it was hidden in the lining of his baggage.
The baggage also contained a can of butane, a lighter, a pipe with white powder residue, a wireless drill with cordless batteries and two outlets taped together with black tape.
TSA agents at the airport contacted the FBI.
Muffley is charged with possession of an explosive in an airport and possessing, or attempting to place, an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft.
His probable cause and detention hearing is Thursday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. in Allentown.
