Nursing Home Owners Acquitted of Patient Deaths

A jury in Louisiana has acquitted the owners of a New Orleans-area nursing home of negligent homicide in the deaths of 35 elderly patients who drowned during Hurricane Katrina.

State prosecutors had argued that Sal and Mabel Mangano had been reckless in not evacuating the nursing home. The defense maintained that it was the government that was reckless during Hurricane Katrina.

The couple still faces multiple civil lawsuits.
