Complex Reactions to Saddam Verdict in Arab World

Citizens of Arabic countries have a variety of reactions to the death sentence delivered to Saddam Hussein Sunday. And the emotions vary by country, says Khaled al-Maeena, editor-in-chief of the English-language Arab News, based in Saudi Arabia.

Many in countries near Iraq, such as Kuwait and Iran, believe Saddam was a tyrant, and believe justice has been served, Maeena says.

But in Jordan and Egypt, Maeena says, many view Hussein's trial as unfair, because it overlooked similar actions by other Arab leaders.

Michele Norris talks with Maeena.
