Itinerary

Sunday

Departing this morning, you’ll travel northeast. After a mid-morning rest stop and a lunch stop (at your own expense) you’ll arrive at Newport Vineyards for a wine tasting. Newport Vineyards was originally planted in 1977 on a hill overlooking Rhode Island Sound with the goal of producing fine wines and as a way of preserving beautiful agricultural land from rapid development. Today the vineyard spans 67 acres. Following your wine tasting at Newport Vineyards, the motorcoach will transfer you to the Newport Marriott Hotel, your home away from home for the next three (3) nights. Located along the harbor, this Four-Diamond rated hotel offers resort-style comfort in the historic downtown district. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (DINNER)

Tuesday

After breakfast you’ll take a self-guided audio tour of The Breakers, the largest and most lavish of the “Gilded Age” mansions. This sumptuous Vanderbilt mansion is perched overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Cliff Walk. The Breakers was designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the founder of the Vanderbilt family fortune. Following the tour, enjoy lunch (at your own expense) and some free time at Brick Marketplace and downtown Newport. This afternoon you will visit The Elms and take a self-guided audio tour. The Elms was originally the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Following the tour, the remainder of the day and evening is at leisure. (BREAKFAST)

Monday

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, you’ll depart for a day of sightseeing. Say hello to “Mrs. Caroline Astor”, the Grande Dame of Newport and New York Society in the late 19th century, who will be your guide. “Mrs. Astor” will relate the history of Newport and the families who made it famous during the “Gilded Age”. She’ll tell you all about her neighbors along Bellevue Avenue, their magnificent summer “cottages” and the highlights of the social season in Newport. Next you will visit Marble House, one of the “Gilded Age” mansions. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt for William K. Vanderbilt and his wife Alva, the house was built with 500,000 cubic feet of American, Italian and African marbles. Take a self-guided audio tour of the mansion and stroll the beautiful grounds complete with a Chinese Tea House. Following the tour, you will have free time for lunch (at your own expense). Later this afternoon you will visit Greenvale Vineyards for a wine tasting. Located along the beautiful Sakonnet River, the vineyard is a small producer of exceptional wines. Greenvale Farm has been in the same family since 1863 and is committed to Historic Preservation, Conservation of Open Space and fine wines. Return to downtown Newport later this afternoon for some free time before dinner at a local restaurant. (BREAKFAST, DINNER)

Wednesday

After breakfast and hotel check- out, you’ll visit Rosecliff, another of the fabulous “Gilded Age” mansions for a tour. Commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899, architect Stanford White modeled Rosecliff after the Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles. After the house was completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million, Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous events here, including a fairy tale dinner and party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini. Scenes from several films have been shot on location at Rosecliff, including The Great Gatsby, True Lies, Amistad and 27 Dresses. Following your visit to Rosecliff, you’ll bid farewell to the Gilded Age grandeur of Newport and head for home. Rest and meal stops (at your own expense) will be made en route. (BREAKFAST)
