The commonwealth announced that it had purchased and distributed more than 1.3 million doses of naloxone to first responders since 2017.
The FDA approved naloxone, the opioid overdose-reversing drug commonly known by the name brand Narcan, as an over-the-counter medication in March.
The Naloxone for First Responders Program is a part of the state Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Over 24,000 opioid overdose reversals have been reported as a result of the initiative, according to the Pa. Department of Health and the Pa. Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.
