Through a grant from the Robert H. Spitz Foundation, WVIA partnered with The Institute to produce a series of Data Visualization Videos.
The two to three-minute videos provide insight into the following critical issues in our region: Workforce, Housing Inequality and Child Abuse.
“Each of them results from one of our six community task forces. They are subject matter experts who guide our research on an annual basis. And so resulting from those studies, we gain insights into the topics that people see in the videos," said Jill Avery-Stoss. She’s the director of operations for The Institute, an economic and applied research and consulting group.
The data that drives the videos comes from a variety of sources including the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and community interviews and surveys, said Avery-Stoss. The Institute also discussed the topics with local nonprofit and business leaders.
The purpose of the videos is to create awareness, said Teri Ooms, executive director of the Institute.
“People aren't always aware of what's happening in their own communities and regions and how those issues affect others," said Ooms. "There is a ripple effect with the economy as well as socially and so it's important to get people to understand what's happening ... the visualization is a three to four minute time investment that tells that story.”
