Decades from now when someone decides to check records to see who won the women's 100 meters of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the entry may read, question mark.
Olympic officials announced this week they are considering leaving the gold medal winner empty. Marion Jones, who appeared to win, has confessed she used performance-enhancing drugs. But the silver medalist, Greek sprinter Katerini Thanou, was involved in a doping scandal during the 2004 games in Athens.
So the IOC is reluctant to offer her the consolation prize. IOC board member Denis Oswald said we'll see how insistent Thanou is. The best way would be not to do anything and just leave it as it is, and there is no gold.
