Should you want to send a handwritten note to the remote Alaskan village of Nelson Lagoon, your choices are plane, boat or soda bottle — though it could take 21 years by bottle.
One sent by a fourth-grader in 1987 just washed up on a beach there. It had bobbed more than 1,700 miles up the coast from Washington. A beachcomber found it and wrote back, opting to use the much quicker U.S. postal service.
