Letters: April Fools

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

Now for some of your e-mail about yesterday's program.

ROBERT SIEGEL, host:

And many of you commented on our review of a composition by Simon Fluegel. Our critic said it represented a daring new aesthetic. The name of the composition, "B Flat."

Mr. SIMON FLUEGEL (Subminimalistic Composer): Is it the exemplar to which all further reductions in the genre must be compared? And which, to warrant hearing, they must equal? I think so.

(Soundbite of music)

Mr. FLUEGEL: And as Descartes would add, that's why I am so.

NORRIS: Holy codfish, said Ron Shecker(ph) of Fort Myers, Florida. Here I was, scratching my head, going huh? Then it dawned on me when your critic said the CD was released this first day of April. All I have to say is bravo.

SIEGEL: Thanks, writes Richard White(ph) of Williamsburg, Virginia. What appeared to be a boring, pretentious review of music I do not like turned into a nonstop laughing session in my car.

NORRIS: And Thomas Fitzpatrick(ph), also from Williamsburg, writes: April Fool's Day is my favorite day of the year. And every year, I look forward to your fool's story. I thought the exploding maple tree story of 2005 could not be topped, yet the profile of "B Flat" exceeded all expectations. Thank you for continuing the fine tradition.

SIEGEL: But there was this from Steve Gel(ph) of Parkerfield, Kansas. I was appalled by your commentator's favorable review of a work by that feckless musical Charlotte(ph) and Fluegel. In an obvious reaction to 20th century eight-tunnel screeching, Fluegel has given us 21st century death of melody.

Not sure if that letter is real or another joke, on us.

NORRIS: And still, Adrian Miller(ph) of Lafayette, Louisiana, didn't see the humor. What a scam, Miller writes. Will artsy, high-brow people buy anything? I wanted to laugh that your reviewer's exaggerated praise. But I was so put off by his utter lack of common sense that I was left speechless. A single note played at random with different instruments isn't music. And you, Mr. Reviewer, are a sad little man with trite little taste.

SIEGEL: Ah, take that.
