Yesterday, we marked the passing of Kermit Love, the costume designer who helped puppeteer Jim Henson create Big Bird and other "Sesame Street" characters. We interviewed Carol Spinney who has played the role of Big Bird.
Phillip Booth(ph) of Bel Air, Texas wrote with this memory. Your interview took me back to my first years in college, he writes. "Sesame Street" came to U.T. El Paso to give a series of concert performances. I was a photographer for the school paper. One of the photos I shot was of Mr. Spinney half in and half out of the Big Bird costume. After I shot the photo, he asked me not to publish that photo to preserve the illusion of Big Bird. I apologized and complied with his request. Thanks for the memory.
Well, also yesterday, we told you about how Montgomery County, Maryland schools are dealing with the high cost of fuel. The school board there is considering doing away with bus services for students. Well, Sue Christensen(ph) of Brookline, Massachusetts was among those who said that kids should be burning up more shoe leather. How is it a bad thing for kids to walk to school, she writes, obesity is a problem, gym time is cut, call it Phys. Ed. and give the kids a chance to say someday, when I was your age, I had to walk three miles to school in the snow, uphill both ways.
