Asleep at the Wheel: Driving Western Swing

Sometimes nothing can get your toes tapping and your feet moving like some good ol' Western swing.

Bob Wills was the father of the genre, the first artist to put electric instruments and drum sets into country music. He toured the United States with his band, the Texas Playboys, from the 1930s through the '60s.

In the 1970s, the band Asleep at the Wheel picked up that mantle and ushered the sound of Western swing into the new millennium. Now based in Texas, the band has brought Wills' story to the stage in a musical drama called A Ride with Bob. The show began in 2005 and was so successful that it continued into 2006.

Though no more performances of the play are scheduled at the moment, the band continues to tour and will be on the road all autumn long.
