Hollywood's biggest money-makers of 2006 include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, X-Men: The Last Stand, and a number of high-profile animated films, including Happy Feet.
Dead Man's Chest came away as the top-earning movie of 2006, bringing in more than $1 billion in worldwide receipts.
But NPR film critic Bob Mondello says that films like Happy Feet will save Hollywood, as smart, well-executed animated films close in on action flicks.
Michele Norris talks with Mondello, who says there is more room than ever for a large-scale spectacle. And that's due in part, he says, to the proliferation of small screens — iPods and the like — in viewers' hands.
