Microsoft's Zune Bids for Piece of iPod's Turf

After watching Apple dominate the portable mp3 player market, Microsoft offers its challenge to the iPod: the Zune, which is being released today.

In addition to its built-in radio, the Zune offers the ability to share songs with other Zune owners wirelessly (for three plays or three days before being given the option to buy them).

But the Zune will be incompatible with songs from the iTunes Music Store, and songs using Microsoft's own PlaysForSure system of digital-rights management.

With a design that at least superficially echoes that of the iPod, it remains to be seen who will buy Microsoft's new player.
