Town Sits High and Dry After Relocation

The town of Valmeyer, Ill., was destroyed in the 1993 floods. Instead of rebuilding back in the flood plain, locals moved the town to the top of a nearby bluff. It was a long process and some residents of the town — southeast of St. Louis — didn't return after the rebuilding. But now folks don't have to worry about the rising Mississippi River.
