More than 1,400 wildfires continue to burn in California. In Big Sur, one of the hardest-hit areas, some residents are choosing to stick around, amid the fog and smoke.
Wilderness guide Steve Harper, for example, plans to protect his home with a special sort of gel kit.
Inspired by a fireman's revelation that diapers don't burn, the "slime" increases homes' odds of surviving, Harper tells Alex Cohen.
"There are so many factors, even the top experts ... are having a hard time modeling this," Harper says, explaining why it is so hard to assess whether he will have to evacuate.
