At Westminster, Old Dog Crowned Top Dog

At the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Tuesday, a 10-year-old Sussex spaniel named Stump was crowned top dog.

He was up against 2,500 dogs and 170 breeds and became the oldest winner for Best in Show.

Stump, a veteran show dog, almost died five years ago.

"He got very sick and he was at a university, the Texas A&M University," says Stump's handler, Scott Sommer. "He lived there for 19 days. He just had his whole body completely quit."

Although Stump finally made a recovery, his show days came to an end. But last week, his owners decided it was time to compete again. And compete he did.

Judge Sari Tietjen picked him from among the seven finalists.

Even Sommer couldn't quite believe the remarkable road to victory.

"They did something miracle," he said. "Because here he is now and looking great and just won Westminster, and I'm just like thrilled."
