  • Nervous investors had a lot to worry about this week, with financial services companies declaring bankruptcy, hoisting for-sale signs and calling for federal assistance. The stock market fell steeply in response. Here, some tips for weathering the financial storm.

  • The Boston Red Sox made up a seven-run deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays and stay alive in the American League Championships. Sportswriter Stefan Fatsis says the Rays can recover from the loss by focusing on their next game.
  • Markets all over the world posted significant losses Friday, following another rough day on Wall Street on Thursday. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged at the beginning of trading Friday, but recovered a bit by midday.
  • The movie business is betting on 3-D to keep people coming to theaters. It's going to be expensive to get the necessary digital equipment into the thousands of movie theaters across the country. So, Dreamworks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg is leading the charge to get studios to help pay the price.
  • Earlier this month, Hurricane Ike shut down the Houston Ship Channel. That left 150 tankers, cargo vessels and container ships waiting offshore. The U.S. Coast Guard started work the next day to get the channel reopened. It had to restore navigational aids in the waters off the coast of Texas.
