Private Afghan TV Channel Unveils Model Contest

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

And let's stay with fashion for a moment for today's last word in business: "Afghan Model." That's the name of a new television modeling competition in Afghanistan. Modeling contests like "America's Top Model" are, of course, popular all over the world, but in a country where many women are still fully covered in burqas, this competition is a bit unusual. The show was announced just one week ago, and already 2,000 men and women have already applied. They will have the freedom to choose their own clothes, just maybe not to let them be seen on the streets of Kabul and Kandahar.

That's the business news on MORNING EDITION from NPR news. I'm Steve Inskeep.
