Schuylkill County borough no longer economically distressed

A borough in Schuylkill County is the 20th municipality in Pennsylvania to leave behind a distressed status.

The state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) announced Thursday that Mahanoy City is no longer economically distressed after seven years with that designation.

Acting Secretary Rick Siger approved Mahanoy City’s exit from the state’s Act 47 program. The city received support from the DCED starting in February 2016 to help reverse an $800,000 deficit.

An aging population and a large decrease in residents contributed to a lower tax base in Mahanoy City, according to the department.

Other municipalities in eastern Pennsylvania considered “distressed” status are Hazleton and Shamokin.
