A English springer spaniel named James won Best in Show in the 131st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York. David Frei, a play-by-play announcer for the show, talks to Robert Siegel about the spaniel and his big win.
James — who is formally named Felicity's Diamond Jim — is a therapy dog who works with Alzheimer's patients. Although his good works are impressive, Frei says, they don't play a role in the judging for the title of Best in Show.
"It could be attitude or charisma or showmanship or whatever you want to call it, but it's that little something extra that makes the judge have his divine moment of inspiration while James is standing in front of him," Frei says. "And James put on a good show last night."
