North Pole connection: Families speak to Santa through ham radio station at University of Scranton

Ham radio operators have provided a connection to the North Pole through Santa Net for 20 years. Families can visit the amateur radio station at the University of Scranton three days this week to speak with Santa.

The Rev. Joseph Murgas developed and patented the "tone method," a system of wireless communication capable of transmitting voice and sound over land.

The Rev. Joseph Murgas developed the wireless tone system in the basement rectory of Sacred Heart Church in Wilkes-Barre. His work will be remembered on Saturday, as the cities’ current mayors share the same messages their predecessors sent via Morse code in 1905.
