  • Officials from the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a tornado blew through Wayne County on the evening of May 27. The storm uprooted trees and damaged barns in Damascus Township, lasting from 6:20 p.m. to 6:22 p.m. Monday evening.The NWS determined the storm was an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranges from zero to five. Maximum wind speeds reached 90 miles per hour.The Wayne County Director of Emergency Management is asking residents to report storm damage by calling the office at (570) 253-1622.The NWS also confirmed a tornado in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County later that evening.
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is inviting the public to look over plans and provide feedback on a bridge project in Northeast Pennsylvania. The online plans display concerns the Delaware River Bridge Rehabilitation Project on State Route 6, which connects Matamoras Borough in Pike County to Port Jervis in Orange County, New York. The project on section 451 of SR 6 proposes replacements for the sidewalks and deck of the current bridge, among other improvements, and is expected to take place in three stages. PennDOT noted that the current bridge does not have a historic designation. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2024 and continue until 2025.
