Former firefighter Bob Brooks piled up more than twice as votes as his closest contenders to win the Democratic nomination for the 7th Congressional District seat. Brooks will face incumbent Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie.

Amid fellow Democrats at a news conference on the Capitol steps, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries questioned why U.S. Rep. Bresnahan would vote for a bill that costs tens of thousands constituents Medicaid and food assistance benefits.

U.S. Reps. Rob Bresnahan, Dan Meuser, Ryan Mackenzie and Glenn Thompson voted Thursday for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that cuts taxes and slashes spending on food stamps and Medicaid.

Decision aligns with House Speaker Mike Johnson's advice to avoid in-person town halls, but Bresnahan spokeswoman said he isn't heeding Johnson's advice, only trying to hear from more people. Online sign-up page limits participation to listeners within the district.

Meuser, Thompson say Trump is keeping his promises; Fetterman, meanwhile, criticizes members of his own party for 'self owns and unhinged petulance.'

Rep. Rob Bresnahan, who vowed to fight cuts that gut Medicaid, says his vote for the resolution doesn't change his promise.
