Veterans invited to the WVIA studios for Mind Over Matter taping
Veterans are invited to come together at the WVIA studios in Pittston for the taping of the next Mind Over Matter television special, Veterans: Wounded Within on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023 at 6 pm. Admission is free but limited, reservations can be made at wvia.org/mindovermatter.
Williamsport center to host Black professional event
The city of Williamsport is partnering with local colleges and a community center to host an event in honor of Black History Month. Williamsport Mayor Derek Slaughter said in a statement that Penn College, Lycoming College and UPMC will host A Night of Empowerment: Conversations with Black Professionals on Feb. 18 at the city’s Community Arts Center, 220 W. 4th St. Doors open at 4:45 p.m. with a networking opportunity for high school and college students with industry partners until and the panel discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and runs until 8 p.m. Tickets should be reserved online at CACLive.com.
Stormwater and flooding problems to be addressed in Scranton
The City of Scranton is holding a community meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to discuss stormwater and flooding issues in the East Mountain section of the city.The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligence Charter School on East Elm Street.East Mountain residents will be able to voice their concerns about stormwater runoff, drainage and more, said Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti.The city also launched a new online form for residents to submit information about stormwater and flooding problems that they witness. The form can be found at www.scrantonpa.gov/arpa.
Stroudsburg mayor resigns
Stroudsburg Mayor Tarah Probst resigned from the role on Wednesday, Nov. 30.Probst was elected to serve as state representative for the 189th District, which covers Pike and Monroe counties.Stroudsburg Borough Council plans to accept Probst's resignation at their Dec. 6 meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. in the Stroudsburg Municipal Building. They will open the floor for suggestions for the borough’s next mayor before making an appointment.Council must replace Probst within 30 days. Johnson College to offer more details about new program

Day two of jury deliberations ends again with no verdict in art and memorabilia theft trial
A jury finished a second day of deliberations in the art and vintage memorabilia theft trial Thursday without reaching a verdict. Jurors asked several questions about legal technicalities and went home after deliberating for about 6½ hours at the William J. Nealon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse.
Public hearings scheduled for proposed utility increases
Residents facing increased water and wastewater rates will have two opportunities this month to give input in Scranton. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) is holding two public hearings on the requests by Pennsylvania American Water Company to increase the rates. The hearings will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Scranton Cultural Center on North Washington Avenue in the city. The first begins at 1 p.m., the second at 6 p.m. Last fall, the water company filed a rate adjustment request with the utility commission, which sets utility rates. Some residential customers would pay more per month for water.
Insurance coverage for childhood stuttering passes Pa. House
A bill to ensure private insurance covers speech therapy for children aged 2 to 6 with stutters passed the House Wednesday in a bipartisan vote of 181-21.
