Argentina's top court upholds Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's corruption conviction
Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner — one of Latin America's most recognizable political figures — is facing 6 years in prison and a lifetime ban from office after a major corruption conviction upheld.
New mural projects underway in Scranton
Large-scale public art projects are underway in downtown Scranton. Installation began Thursday on a mural dedicated to NBC’s comedy, The Office, located on the eastern side of 503 Lackawanna Avenue. Quotes from the show and colorful shapes will join black-and-white portraits of 17 cast members from the hit series. In a statement, nonprofit Scranton Tomorrow said the work is part of their mural arts program and will take a few weeks to install. A formal dedication ceremony with Philadelphia-based artist Kala Hagopian is scheduled for October 6th. Since late July, workers have been priming walls along the Biden Expressway to remove and replace the Electric City Mural.
Fundraiser will benefit the Monroe County Historical Association
"Raise Your Glass & Support the Past” for the Monroe County Historical Association.The fundraising dinner and auction for the historical association will be held on Sept. 7. The event from 6 to 9 p.m. is at the Skytop Lodge, this year's premier sponsor.It will feature a three-course dinner paired with a selection of wines accompanied by the live music of the Erin McClelland Trio. An online silent auction will be held leading up to the event.The fundraiser is $165 per person. Advocate program seeking more volunteers
As the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program of Pike County nears the successful completion of their first year, they are hosting another training for future advocates.CASA volunteers are not only advocates but mentors and a steady support for children within the Dependency Court system.The program currently has 16 fully trained and active volunteer advocates serving 76% of the children within that court system. Pike County is hoping to be able to serve 100% children in 2023.The virtual information session is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. on Zoom.Those interested in becoming a CASA, should contact Dawn Allison at dmallison@pikepa.org or call 570-296-9827.
Alvernia University unveils Pottsville campus
Reading-based Alvernia University unveiled a new location in downtown Pottsville this week.Pottsville CollegeTowne at 500 Progress Avenue spans 17,000 square feet of classroom, office, lab and community space.The location offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs along with certification programs. According to a statement from the university, Alvernia’s School of Graduate and Adult Education will use the Pottsville campus to address the needs of Schuykill County’s adult student population, including 23.5% of county residents over the age of 25 who started college but did not earn a bachelor’s degree and the 12.6% of residents who started college and did not earn any degree.
Mothers Day event scheduled
The Catherine McAuley Center is hosting a Mother’s Day Tea Party.The party to celebrate mothers and other women in our lives, is open to the community. Refreshments, finger sandwiches and dessert will be served.There will also be children’s activities, a family photo station, door prizes, raffles and more.The tea party on Saturday, May 6, is from noon to 2 p.m. at the Space at Olive on Wyoming Avenue in Scranton.Tickets are $25 per adult and up to four children ages 18 and under are included on the ticket.Sponsorship, donation and volunteer opportunities are available.For more details or to purchase tickets, contact Development Director Mary-Pat Ward at 570-342-1342 or mpward@catherinemcauleycenter.org.
Geisinger is offering new cooking classes
Geisinger is now offering in-person and virtual culinary medicine classes at its new state-of-the-art teaching kitchen in Selinsgrove.The classes begin Tuesday, Dec. 6, and are free of charge and open to everyone. The four classes are led by a culinary-trained registered dietitian.Culinary medicine is a new program offered by Geisinger. It consists of hands-on classes that combine the art and skill of cooking with the science of nutrition.The curriculum is evidence-based and emphasizes the role of food in the treatment and prevention of disease based on the Mediterranean diet, according to Geisinger.The Selinsgrove kitchen is located at 157 Roosevelt Ave.For more details or to register, visit geisinger.org/cooking.
Mother's Day tea party will be held
A Scranton-based nonprofit is hosting a Mother’s Day tea party.All are welcome at the Catherine McAuley Center’s celebration on Saturday, May 6.The tea party is from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Space at Olive on Wyoming Avenue in Scranton.Tickets are $25 for one adult and up to four children 18 and under. That also includes refreshments, sandwiches and desserts, as well as children’s activities, Mother’s Day photos and raffles.The McAuley Center will also pay tribute to two exceptional Women of the Year, Kelley Lindsay and Sheila McMillan.For more details or to purchase tickets, contact the Catherine McAuley Center at 570-342-1342.
Carbondale community meeting scheduled for this week
Residents of Carbondale are invited to a community meeting this Thursday, May 18 from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the Greater Carbondale YMCA. NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania organized the free event which seeks to gather input on how Carbondale can be improved in the coming years. In a statement, NeighborWorks said they’ve asked community members throughout the last year to share what they see as Carbondale’s values. A cut above: Luzerne County child wins first place in national mullet championship
Kamden Cunningham, 6, won first place in the USA Mullet Championships. He won a custom championship belt, GoPro camera and $5,000 cash.
