Waverly Township residents plan to fight a zoning permit issued to the Chabad of the Abingtons to stop the rabbi’s efforts to build 12 cabins for religious use.

Waverly Township issued the Chabad of the Abingtons a zoning permit last week to build 12 cabins for religious purposes, according to the rabbi’s lawyer.

In a tense three-hour hearing over the proposal from Chabad of the Abingtons, residents only heard from one witness: Rabbi Benny Rapoport. He hopes to provide Jews of Northeast Pennsylvania a place to immerse themselves in Jewish traditions.

The Pinchot Mansion in Pike County will host unique tours this Saturday. In Williamsport, a museum will offer half price for National Train Day and Maker Fest is happening at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds.

The NEPA Film Festival kicks off Friday at the Waverly Community House. Also this weekend is Pennsylvania Polkafest and a plant and tea crawl in the Poconos.

From film screenings and Super Bowl watch parties to lectures and historical walking tours, the region will celebrate Black history throughout the month.
