Waverly Township residents plan to fight a zoning permit issued to the Chabad of the Abingtons to stop the rabbi’s efforts to build 12 cabins for religious use.

Waverly Township issued the Chabad of the Abingtons a zoning permit last week to build 12 cabins for religious purposes, according to the rabbi’s lawyer.

A Chabad rabbi wants to open 12 cabins for a religious retreat in Waverly Twp., Lackawanna County. Last week’s three-hour zoning meeting became tense.

In a tense three-hour hearing over the proposal from Chabad of the Abingtons, residents only heard from one witness: Rabbi Benny Rapoport. He hopes to provide Jews of Northeast Pennsylvania a place to immerse themselves in Jewish traditions.
