A century ago, the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company of Allentown – now PPL – dammed the Wallenpaupack River to provide hydroelectric power for the region. The project created Lake Wallenpaupack and generated not only electricity but also a $72 billion per year outdoor economy for the Poconos.

The Chamber of the Northern Poconos officially commemorated the 100th Anniversary of Lake Wallenpaupack on Friday.

Events this weekend include Pittston’s annual celebration of the red juicy fruit thought of as a vegetable, an arts festival in Bloomsburg and a 5K at a winery in the Poconos.

A massive egg hunt is planned for Wayne County, one just for adults will be held in Lehighton, and beeping eggs will make an inclusive event in Wilkes-Barre.

Governor Josh Shapiro hoped to hook a fish out of Lake Wallenpaupack Saturday while luring tourists into Pennsylvania. Shapiro launched the state’s tourism rebrand: Pennsylvania: The Great American Getaway on Monday at PNC Field in Moosic. He returned to Northeastern PA Saturday to spend time in the Poconos with his family.
