Eerie haze from Canadian wildfires blankets the Wilkes-Barre area

Smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada has spread south causing an eerie yellow sky and haze throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. Not only is the smoke visible, the smell of smoke is in the air. Because of that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued an air quality alert for all of Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley for Wednesday, June 7. The agency says "young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities." The National Weather Service in Binghamton expects the smoke to gradually clear tomorrow, June 8.
