A 26-year-old man with a history of mental health troubles shot his parents and killed a public safety officer in a gated Northeast Pennsylvania residential community on Sunday, state troopers say.

Lucas Aron Gartrell is charged with criminal homicide and related charges for trying to kill his parents and shooting and killing a security officer at The Hideout in Wayne County.

A state appeals court ruled Friday that a special election to replace ex-Lackawanna County Commissioner Matt McGloin can go on as planned Nov. 4. McGloin resigned seven months ago and the county is still trying to replace him.

Lucas Aron Gartrell faces homicide charges following Sunday afternoon shooting at The Hideout, a private residential community in Wayne County, state police said.
